Developing and Nurturing a Positive Safety Culture
Ultimately, for an SMS to be effective and successful, it must foster a positive safety of culture, where all associates in an organization are informed, aware, and take personal responsibility for safety-related issues.
- Informed: The organization must develop a culture in all personnel understand and are aware of the hazards inherent in their individual areas of operation.
- Training: Personnel at all levels of the organization must be provided with the necessary knowledge, skills and job experience to accomplish their responsibilities safely. Furthermore, they must be trained to identify new or previously unrecognized safety risks and be equipped to develop control measures to mitigate these risks.
- Reporting: The organization must nurture a corporate environmental in which personnel at all levels feel free to share and report on safety-related issues without fear of reprisals.
- Just: The organization must define what is and what is not acceptable behavior in regards to safety-related issues.
